Crawdad Canyon is the only privately owned outdoor rock climbing park in Utah. The walls are basalt — the same lava rock that formed this canyon — and they hold 234 bolted routes ranging from beginner slabs a ten-year-old can walk up to overhangs that will humble anyone.
Because the park is private, you are not competing with a queue for the classics the way you would at a public crag. You climb, you rest by the pool, you climb again. Most families spend the morning on the rock and the afternoon in the water.
Bring your own gear if you have it. If you are new, the routes closest to the pool are the friendliest place to start, and there is almost always somebody around happy to point you at the right one. Everyone climbing signs the same liability waiver as the rest of the canyon, which you can sign online before you arrive.
Questions we get asked
Do I need my own climbing gear?
Yes — bring your own rope, harness and shoes. The routes are bolted, so you do not need to place protection, but we do not rent equipment.
Is it good for beginners and kids?
Very. A number of the routes near the pool are gentle enough for a first-time climber, and plenty of ten-year-olds top out on their first visit.
How much does climbing cost?
Nothing extra. The $18 Canyon Access Pass covers climbing along with swimming, crawdad catching, hiking and the game courts.
How far is it from St. George?
About 25 minutes north, at 287 E Veyo Resort Rd, Veyo, Utah.
